you are not designed for everyone to like you

I saw her watching me. Her attitude bespoke a severe disdain, for what, I couldn’t say. Perhaps my very existence? I was polite and said hello to her. Maybe I was too polite. I smiled when she looked my way. Maybe I was too cheerful. I laughed at her jokes. Maybe I laughed too loud. I tried to make her like me. Maybe I tried too hard.

Maybe, just maybe, it had nothing to do with me.
